This Sports Psychology blog, comes as Joey Barton receives a six-match ban from the Football Association, for assaulting Ousmane Dabo.

Football: Joey Barton - A Fresh Start

So Joey Barton is to miss six matches, with six matches suspended. Whether it was six matches, or sixteen matches, it represents, probably, the last chance for Joey Barton. The last chance, to prove to both himself, and to others, that he can conduct himself, in the proper manner, on and off the field.

It means, Barton recognising the triggers, that release the demons in him. The micro-signals, that cause him to see red. That cause him to feel, that he has to defend himself though violence. And also, to understand better, the rage and anger the burns within him.

He can emerge from out of this unhappy episode, a stronger person. Stronger, in his ability to know himself. Stronger in his desire, to right the wrongs of his past. Determined to focus exclusively on his professional career. Knowing that he will tested and taunted by fans and players alike. All trying to throw a lighted match, into the Joey Barton firework factory.

He must mentally prepare for those challenges, certain that they are coming is way. It is now a question of will and discipline. His career is on the line. He can still make full use of his talent. But he must have a burning desire to do so. And the mental strength, to turn the other cheek, when provoked.

Many, will want him to fail. That, should be motivation enough.
