This Sports Psychology blog comes as England begin their tour of New Zealand with victory in the Twenty-20 match in Auckland.

Cricket: England - Massively Important!

Paul Collingwood - Enthusiasm!'Massively Important'. The reaction of England captain Paul Collingwood to victory over New Zealand. Kevin Pietersen was even more effusive.'The sky's the limit for this young side', he said.

Whilst the enthusiasm of the England players is admirable, perhaps a little restraint would be encouraged. Since their historic 2005 Ashes victory, England have underperformed. They are now in the process of rebuilding. The language they are using, seems to overstate the case for the England team. Build things up out of proportion. Use one victory in a limited overs game, as evidence. As a sign.

It's the start of a tour. Better to make these kind of declarations when the work is done. When New Zealand have been put to the sword. In all forms of the game. That, then, may be critical evidence of England's development. Until then, better to restrain the emotions and let results speak for themselves. Too much emotion can obscure the truth.
