Today's Sports Psychology blog comes after David Beckham's knee injury in LA Galaxy's Superliga Final against Pachuca.

Football: David Beckham - Stop!

David Beckham - Trying Too Hard

So David Beckham is set to miss England's qualifier's after incurring a knee injury that will keep him out for four to six weeks. Why is this not a surprise?

The demands that Beckham was putting on his body would have tested a player much younger. Playing for England one day. A transatlantic flight the next day, followed by another game for LA Galaxy. Unreasonable demands.

The desire to play for England; to not be the forgotten man; to earn 100 caps. And the need to please the paymasters in LA. To not let anyone down.

Right now David Beckham should say to himself, 'Stop!'. It's too stressful. Trying too hard to meet so many needs. And not doing himself justice. As well as losing credibility. Give to yourself, before giving to others.

He should do the tough thing and call Steve McClaren and retire from international football. Then devote himself to becoming a leader in American football. To inspiring as many people as possible to play the game. At the moment he is heading for a fall. It's time to Stop!.
