The Sports Psychology Blog
Today's Sports Psychology blog, comes as Paul Jewell stands down, from his post as manager of Derby County.
Football: Derby County - What Now?
So, after a pretty dismal season, Paul Jewell stands down as manager of Derby County. In some ways, The Rams are back where they were, before Billy Davies took over. Languishing near the bottom of The Championship.
Davies brought a strong sense of direction, and a clear plan to the football club. Despite their poor Premiership start under him, it would inevitably take time to establish Derby back in the top league. And that a relegation would not be a bad thing. Simply, an opportunity to come back stronger, and better prepared.
But no. The directors appeared impatient with Davies, and they have paid the price for their rashness. So, what now? There are many good managers out there, looking for work. But, perhaps, the Derby directors need to go back to the drawing board, and set out a long-term plan. A plan, that seeks to engage the services of a hungry young manager, that will be given the time, to sort out this famous football club.
Instant success is not the answer. Derby County can become a top club again. But, it will require a quality of decision-making, and strategic thinking at the top, that has not been witnessed in recent times.
Note - The subsequent appointment. of Nigel Clough, is a step in the right direction for Derby County. Let us trust, that he will be given the time, to shape the football club, in his own image.
