The Sports Psychology Blog
This Sports Psychology blog, comes after Newcastle United announce the appointment of Joe Kinnear, as caretaker manager.
Football: Newcastle United - Joe Kinnear

So, in a move, completely out of the blue, Joe Kinnear is appointed caretaker manager of Newcastle United. The internet messageboards are awash with hysteria and derision.
The public reaction is understandable, given the manner in which Newcastle United have conducted their affairs recently. But, its unfortunate to see men like Joe Kinnear, who have served the professional game with distinction, subject to such abuse.
Yet, Newcastle United have brought this on themselves. Right now, they urgently need some leadership at the football club. Clear thinkers and communicators, that have a coherent strategy, allied with a feel for the grassroots of the club. Tradition with a vision.
And, has the patience and acumen, to try to trace and understand, why the Newcastle story, has turned out the way it has. It's psychological roots and outplay. This last part, is perhaps the most crucial of all. For constant change has been built at Newcastle, upon seemingly flawed foundations.
Newcastle's fortunes were revived under Kevin Keegan, after they faced relegation from the old Second Division. Maybe, another relegation, and a season or two in the Championship, would help re-build a positive, success culture at the club. Restore values and pride, and get everyone pulling in the same direction. Reduce expectations, and build a solid long-term platform for success.
None of this is Joe Kinnear's fault. He is innocent. And should not be subject to the ridicule, that has come his way. He may well do a steady job. But, right now, Newcastle have become a magnet for instability. And, it will take a long time, to steady this lurching ship.
