This blog comments on an uplifting occurrence, as the Virgin train pulls into Euston Station.

Transport: Euston Station - The Cleaner

The Manchester Piccadilly to Euston train, is moving on time through the verdant English spring morning. Passengers read papers; listen to music; sleep. Normal things on a May morning.

Every so often, a cleaner walks through the train. He collects used cups and other rubbish, and drops it into a large bag. He must do this four or five times, throughout the journey. He seems conscientious, and goes about his business quietly and effectively.

At five past eleven, the train arrives at London Euston station. As the passengers file out of the carriage, there seems to be a lot of shouting coming from the train door. As I get closer, it seems that the cleaner has discarded his bag. Instead of collecting rubbish, he is giving each passenger, as they leave the train, a very hearty farewell.

Not just 'have a good day'. But motivational statements, such as 'It's not what you do, it's the way that you do it'. Or,'There's no such thing as bad weather. It's simply weather'. He shakes hands and gives high-fives, in a celebratory manner.

As the passengers make their way down the platform, into Wednesday morning London, everyone appears to be talking about the Motivational Cleaner. He has lifted the prevailing mood. Put a smile on people's faces. A spring in their step. This man should be on an executive salary.
