Football Psychology - The Euphoria Of Marlon Harewood!
Saturday's Premier League action was memorable for many things. But one image stood out above all.
Half-way through the first half at the DW Stadium, Blackpool's new striker Marlon Harewood swept a delicious pass into the path of Gary Taylor- Fletcher. The Seasiders forward stroked the ball into the Wigan net, to begin the rout of the hapless Latics.
Instead of going to the scorer to celebrate, Harewood simply raised his head to the heavens, in a gesture of thanks to the football gods. The gods who had not abandoned him. Who had given him one last crack at the big-time.
No one really knows the doubts a top player goes through, when they fear their best days are behind them. The uncertainty as to whether a manager will believe in them again. And whether they will actually still be good enough, if the chance finally does come.
That's why Marlon Harewood's private prayer was so moving. A moment when the player knew that his hopes of one last crack at the Premier League football had been realised. A moment when all the personal self-doubts and fears were allayed.
A quiet euphoria made real. Where self-doubts, uncertainty, hopes and dreams all play out in the emotion of the moment. As the virgin queen Elizabeth the First said on her death-bed,' I would give all my wordly treasures for another breath of life!' Sentiments Marlon Harewood may well understand.
