The Football Psychology Blog
This Football Psychology blog, comes as Arsenal's defeat to Barcelona, is overshadowed by more criticism of referees.
Football Psychology - The Ref Is A ****** Joke!
Arsenal out of Europe. The ref Martin Hansson apparently at fault. This three days after Arsene Wenger's attack on Anthony Taylor for his decision-making in the home draw with Sunderland.
Then we have Alex Ferguson laying into Martin Atkinson. And top ref Mark Clattenburg thinking of packing it all in. And who can blame him.
It's open season on refs these days. As we enter the business end of the season, pressure mounts on already under-stress managers. Any decision that impacts on the outcome, releases this stress in attacks on the man in the middle.
He's an easy target. Criticism of the ref, disguises failings elsewhere. It diverts attention. Prevents us analysing the truth of under-achievement.
The refs are easy to bully. They don't carry the power of a Wenger or Ferguson. But they uphold the game rules. And these attacks undermine the spirit of the game, which is based on the human traits of both excellence and frailty.
It's time for the managers to take stock and back off. Football is not meant to be an exercise in perfection. It's a mirror of human strength and weakness. And both should be embraced and understood in equal measure.
