Sports Psychology Report - The Brain Of The Perfect Football Manager

CodemastersThis report was created by Martin Perry for Codemaster and their Football League Manager 2006 video game. The aim of this special Sports Psychology report is to try to create the brain of the perfect football manager.

Sports Psychology Overview

In our search for the mythical 'perfect brain for the perfect manager' we looked at how, in coaches old and new, physiology, psychology, philosophy and sociology would impact through physical qualities, mental strength, thinking processes, background and upbringing.

We examined studies of the way left and right hemispheres of the brain influence behaviour and ways of thinking. We concluded that the majority of managers tend to be left brained (logical thinkers) but some are right brained (intuitive thinkers). Those rare managers, like Jose Mourinho, who are a combination of both, would be ideal in the modern age.

We isolated and analysed the attributes of the perfect manager and listed the top ten in order of importance. We determined which managers best demonstrated the necessary psychological attributes, with an agreed bias of 60% - 40% in favour of contemporary managers. We highlighted examples of how those managers had manifested the identified characteristics.

The Top Ten Attributes Of The Perfect Manager

brainIn theory, the perfect manager will be whole-brained, so there is no bias in favour of, say, logical, sequential, rational, analytical, objective i.e. left brain thinking or random, intuitive, holistic, synthesizing, subjective i.e. right brain thinking.

In what circumstances will he fail if he is too right brained or left brained? Those who lose their jobs are, in general, incapable of changing the way they think or act. Our manager must be versatile and flexible, therefore whole-brained.

Using these criteria and attributes, a fusion of the following individuals and qualities would generate the perfect manager. They would see the small detail in the big picture which, in our opinion, is the essential DNA of perfection.
