Sports Psychology Report - The Brain Of The Perfect Football Manager
10: The Organiser
Will have observed and worked with others and learned from them then, when given a position of authority, applying what he has assimilated and adapting it appropriately. Preparation will have been meticulous. Loves the attention to detail; thorough, meticulous, painstaking. Leaves nothing to chance. The organiser is usually an introvert by nature, happy to do their best work in the shadows.
The Manager - Steve McClaren
Despite his pedigree as assisitant to Jim Smith, Sir Alex Ferguson and Sven Goran Ericksson, Mclaren is in the process of furthering his skills and knowledge at the Wawick University/UEFA course, Certificate in Applied Management, in order, 'to add one or two percent on top of what I am already doing.'
For McClaren, preparation is everything. It was as a coach he made his reputation. Now, as a manager, his cautious methods do not always endear him to Boro fans, but he has a produced a team which is regularly punching above its weight, so that it is no surprise to see them progressing in the UEFA Cup. He is putting a difficult jigsaw in place piece by piece; it requires patience and he has it.
Rather like his compatriot at Bolton, Allardyce, he takes mature, experienced players and fits them into solid, hard working unit which his Chairman, Gibson, has recently criticized, wanting a more, 'attack minded' approach. But McClaren feels that his tightly organised squad will bring long-term success.
