How Do I Make A Career In Sports Psychology?
I receive numerous emails a week, from graduates looking to make a career in the world of sports psychology. The sight of Bob Rotella preparing Padraig Harrington for the Open Championship play-off, or Jos Vanstiphout motivating Ernie Els, lights the fires of many peoples ambitions.
It's a fulsome and rewarding career. But it's not easy. Not many sports psychologists have practises big enough to take on graduates for work experience. And its virtually impossible to get straight into a Premiership club, or other major sports team. So what to do?
The best route into sports psychology is to start local. Put an add in the local gym. Contact a junior football team. Find someone you can work with and try out your basket of ideas. You don't need to charge for your services at this point. A local junior rugby team would be more than happy to get the edge over the local rivals, through the power of sports psychology.
This way you can quietly go about building up your reputation. Turn theory into practise. Discover what works. Learn from your mistakes.
Once you start to be successful, people will talk positively about you and refer you. Word will spread. Especially when you turn a team of underachievers into winners. Then you can start to charge for your services.
This process may take up to eighteen months. You will need another form of income during this time. But if you are diligent, there is no reason why this path cannot lead you to the point where, one day, your client is heading down the eighteenth fairway, needing a three to become Open Champion.
Build it and it will come.
Note - I have personally coached many graduates in the building of their sports psychology careers. If you would like to speak to me about your sports psychology future, then Contact Me and I will be happy to try to help.
